Damn, I'm jealous!
Day 1 of the Rickshaw Run and the team are finally underway. And where am I? Laid up in Delhi looking like the onset of elphantitis has begun. What to do?! (Said complete with small head shake!) Still hoping I'll be able to catch up with the guys mid route somewhere but this foot isn't exactly healing as fast as I'd like.
Anyway, sounds like the guys are settling in to some kind of routine. Lots of frustrations the first few days with everyone getting to know each other and their role. Mammoth discussions about which route to take, due t0 the incidents in Pune and Kolhapur, but finally they've worked it out. Still no photos yet which is a shame but hoping they'll be able to upload some this evening.
Just about 200km's to cover today, with Gordon at the helm once again. Katies driving lesson early this morning apparently not going quite according to plan! Next stop is Bijapur! Here's what Lonely Planet have to say about the place:
Ruins and still-intact gems of 15th- to 17th-century Islamic architecture embellish old, dusty Bijapur like so many tatters of faded sultans’ finery. It’s a fascinating place to explore, blessed by a wealth of mosques, mausoleums, palaces and fortifications, whose austere grace is in complete contrast to the sculptural extravagance of the Chalukyan and Hoysala temples further south.
Bijapur was the capital of the Adil Shahi kings from 1489 to 1686, and was one of the splinter states formed when the Bahmani Muslim kingdom broke up in 1482. The town has a strong Islamic character but is also a centre for the Lingayat brand of Shaivism, which emphasises a single personalised god. The Lingayat Siddeshwara Festivalruns for eight days in January/February.
More later!
